It is with great trepidation that I am posting my 2004 GT3 for sale! I haven’t been driving much since getting the Turbo and going to get something even more track focused to replace it. $46k for just the car with OEM wheels and seats, $54k with Tequipment bar, GT3 Euro seats, Forgeline wheels, TR Motorsports forged wheels, 2 pc floating front rotors, spare pads, and 8 more miscellaneous wheels.Car has pretty much everything done that a GT3 should have! Welded coolant lines, 2 pc lower control arms front and rear, toe links, Guard diff internals (thanks Matt Monson) with Cup Bellville washers. KW Clubsport dampers, RS (single mass) flywheel and clutch, etc. Transmission was rebuilt by Chris Cervelli at around 90-95k miles.I bought this car from a good friend about 10 years ago and have loved every moment with it! I’ve known it was going for sale for a bit, but have hesitated to list as I’m REALLY going to miss it! Just cant justify, (as good as I am at justifying), keeping it AND the new toy!Currently set up as a track toy. Really low, lots of camber, and ClubSport dampers. I hope it goes to someone who will continue to drive and enjoy it is meant to be!Why so inexpensive?? 108k miles

Right? Motor will probably need a running through in the not too distant future, but you’ve got a lot of money to play with at that price. I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

I know the mechanic that has maintained this car in Colora do Springs the last few years.  He was my mechanical mentor.  He posted the link to this sale on his personal book’o face page, which means this car is the real deal.  Not many cars get his endorsement, and for one with the engine in the wrong place to get it means it has to be a pretty special.

YES. My first ride-along at the track was in a 996 GT3 (my instructor’s) - what an awesome ride (and an awesome guy).

I’m sure this will find a good home.

eehhhh I dont think it would. something like that would probably have been done when the trans was out. but if they kept it up on its oil change diet, (which obviously, they have) I dont see why something would start to let go.

Yeah I’ll edit that to say that it won’t “probably” need a running through, but I think you’d want to budget that in mind given the track use, just for your own sanity. But by all means, take care of it and beat it into submission until it cries uncle, fix it, and do it all over again.

I not so sure. Those motors are derived from the race motor. The Mezger motors are really well done pieces. There is another one or was another high mileage 996 GT3 in Kansas or Nebraska or Iowa or something. The owner would take it to and from their home to Denver on a regular basis. It had like 150K on it or something.

Wrote a long response, but it didn’t show....

I am the owner/seller of this car! It’s a track toy, not a show car. Has almost 108k miles. One small ding on top of fender, front and rear bumper covers, “frunk” lid, and one fender have had paint work. All done by the best Porsche shop in Denver. Did I mention it’s a toy, not a show car?? Maintenance has been done by me or by outstanding technicians, but frankly has been very limited! I’d consider rebuilding the calipers at some point (no issues now, but they’ve been used and gotten HOT!) The only “issue” I haven’t addressed yet is a leaky chain tensioner. When the car sits for a long time (as it does), when I first start it, there is a clacking noise for up to a few seconds while the oil pressure builds in the tensioner. Not an issue week to week, but only if it sits for a long time.

Aesthetically, it’s really nice for a 108k mile track toy, but not nearly show car nice! It’s missing one inner fender liner and (I think) two plastic under-trays.

I bought it almost 10 years ago from a friend who put the first 81k miles on it. It was his every day and only car!!! I street drove it for several years (along with DE events and NASA time trials). Bought a 997TT street car a few years ago. It’s a WAY better street car than the GT3, so the GT3 has been relegated to just occassional track use. I am a professional driving coach and spend more time teaching than driving my own cars!

For my day job, I work as an auto broker helping folks find new and pre-owned cars. If anyone wants to trade, I can accomplish that at work so you can utilize sales tax credit (where applicable).

Thanks for reading! CheeRS!

Joe

No doubt, but there’s a lot of scuttlebutt out there that dedicated track GT3s have significant reduced engine lives compared to street cars. Just depends on how much of that 108k came on track. I’m sure there’s still plenty of life left and they’re still incredibly robust compared to your average race car, but street life and track life are two different things.

My point was, it’s still a good deal even if you need to go through the top end in the relatively near future.

How do you sleep at night? (I kid, but I imagine that still stings, even if you had great reasons for not doing it at the time).

Man, this is awesome! Thanks for chiming in.

I’m halfway tempted to sell my 40th AE 996 and take a crack at this thing now that it’s not my daily, but I’ve got enough ongoing cash outflow   right now I probably shouldn’t.

Best of luck, this is going to look like a stupid good deal in the near future if it isn’t already.

Yes, there was about a 2-3 year window (during/after the recession) that these were DIRT cheap!   Wish I had picked up a dozen!

It wasn’t just these.

1-2 year old 997 C2S’s were in the low 40's

low mileage 997 GT3's were as low as the high 60's.

It just wasn’t financially sensible for me at the time.

Your car is the best non GT/Turbo 996!   You wouldn’t have difficulty selling it!  :)  The 996 GT3 is truly awesome and (I think) in another 15-20 years will be looked at like a ‘73 RS is today.   For this reason WAY too many people DON’T drive them, and that’s a shame!    Camber could be taken out, ride ht raised, and shocks softened on mine to make it an acceptable street car, but just BARELY acceptable.   Even bone stock, the 996 GT3 is a VERY “focused” car, and that focus is not on street comfort or noise attenuation!   I’m going more extreme, a dedicated, Porsche, race car, that (I hope) will also hold value well!   Wish I could justify both!

That was a 996 Turbo (also a Mezger) with something like 500 k miles! Based in MN, but drove to IA a lot (or vice versa). I think that car was purchased by a friend of mine in MN and it’s still running.

Edit: Found the article

https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/buying-maintenance/a32639/this-porsche-996-turbo-for-sale-has-an-absurd-590000-miles-on-it/

Mezger was the best motor Porsche ever put in a 911. Virtually bullet-proof and entirely re-buildable! With the new car, I’ll still have two of them! :)

I bought it summer 2009 with 81k miles from a friend who used it as his daily driver. He did DE’s in the car. (I actually drove it at Mid America with him when it was almost new!). He had dedicated race cars, so this was not his primary track car.

2009-2010 I probably did 10 total track events. (PCA/ BMWCCA DE’s). In 2010 or 2011 I started doing NASA time trials (and winning contingency tires from Hoosier) which is not a lot of hours as the game is to get the fastest SINGLE lap. Put this way... I won tires faster than I could use them up!

I started working as a driving instructor for my favorite car company’s driving school in the Spring of 2012. With that much summer travel and wanting to coach when I was home, I’ve probably averaged 3 days per year since then.

I haven’t done the math, but maybe 10-11k miles of track use?
